CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA

Preamble (1980)

WE, THE GUYANESE PEOPLE,

Proud heirs of the indomitable will of our forebears, in a spirit of reconciliation and cooperation, proclaim this Constitution in order to:

Safeguard and build on the rich heritage, won through tireless struggle, bequeathed us by our forebears;

Afrm our sovereignty, our independence and our indissolubility;

Forge a system of governance that promotes concerted effort and broad-based participation in national decision-making in order to develop a viable economy and a harmonious community based on democratic values, social justice, fundamental human rights, and the rule of law;

Celebrate our cultural and racial diversity and strengthen our unity by eliminating any and every form of discrimination;

Value the special place in our nation of the Indigenous Peoples and recognise their right as citizens to land and security and to their promulgation of policies for their communities;

Acknowledge the aspirations of our young people who, in their own words, have declared that the future of Guyana belongs to its young people, who aspire to live in a safe society which respects their dignity, protects their rights, recognises their potential, listens to their voices, provides opportunities, ensures a healthy environment and encourages people of all races to live in harmony and peace and afrm that their declaration will be binding on our institutions and be a part of the context of our basic law;

Demonstrate our commitment to protect our natural environment and endowment;

Create a republican community practically aware that the nances, industry, communications, education, business and technology of the world are global factors affecting all in which all must engage and from which all must benet.

As citizens of Guyana, we adopt these fundamental laws and make provision for their amendment to reect changes in our society, inspired by our collective quest for a perfect nation, whose characteristics include the commitments, concepts, and other principles proclaimed in this preamble.

CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

Preamble (1996)

We the people of South Africa, Recognize the injustices of our past; Honor those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land; Respect those who have worked to build and develop our country; and Believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity. We therefore, through our freely elected Representatives, adopt this Constitution as the supreme law of the Republic so as to. Heal the divisions of the past and establish society based on democratic values, social justice, and fundamental human rights;

Lay the foundations for a democratic and open society in which Government is based on the will of the people and every citizen is quality protected in law:

Improve the quality of life of all citizens and free the potential of each person and;

Build a united and democratic South Africa able to take its rightful place asa sovereign state in the family of nations.
